Santa has also confirmed that he will be paying a visit AND he is bringing a little something for the first 100 children! This is also a great opportunity to get their photo taken with Santa without fighting the crowds at the mall.

While the event takes place on one evening, the food collection takes place over a few weeks. Admission to the event is simply a non-perishable food item. Donating is as easy as bringing in a food item to Body Fit Health Club and putting it under the Christmas tree. All food and money raised go directly to the Loaves and Fishes Food Bank in Uxbridge.

This years holiday wish list includes:

noodles and sauce

rice and sauce

peanut butter

canned ham

tuna

pork and beans

flaked ham

shampoo

hand soap

toothpaste

toothbrushes – adult and child

So come on out and bring the kids! It’s a great event.

A few years ago, about the time that I wrote that letter for Jumpstart, I saw this commercial.

This Saturday, September 3rd, come out and participate in our first annual Mudnewton trail run in support of Jumpstart. Remember, every dollar that is donated to Jumpstart in Uxbridge, stays in Uxbridge. The course is set and it’s totally awesome.

Register here: www.mudnewton.com until midnight tonight or come out and register on race day. All the details are on the web site.

I really hope to see you there.

Twice per year there are line-ups of people handing over thousands and thousands of dollars at the arena. I am referring to registration nights for organized sports and recreation.

Thousands of kids sign up for house league sports and the parents happily write a cheque. It’s like clock work.

But not for all.

I’ve been coaching youth baseball in town for a few years now and 2 summers ago I was approached by one of my players parents. I was asked if I could write a letter on their behalf so their child could play hockey.

I knew the family outside of baseball and was aware that money was always tight. Paying for their child’s registration fees would have been a real struggle without the help of this one particular charity that has flown under the radar….at least for me.

I am referring to the Canadian Tire Jumpstart Program.

Twice per year Canadian Tire Jumpstart provides a grant up to a maximum of $300 per qualifying child per session (i.e., spring/summer, fall/winter) to the non-profit or charitable organization coordinating the sport or recreational activity. Since each child’s financial needs are unique, Canadian Tire Jumpstart’s grant goes towards equipment, registration and/or transportation costs.

The money to provide the funding comes from many sources including private donations, special events and in-store fund raisers. But what really inspired me to want to help was that all the money that is raised in town stays in town.

Anyway, I was very happy to write the letter and even happier that I was introduced to the program.

Since then I am pleased to say that we are putting our support behind the Jumpstart Progam and here is how we are doing it:

1) From the sale of every small bottle of water at Body Fit, 50 cents will go directly to the program.

2) A portion of the proceeds from Mudnewton will also go to Jumpstart.

The water needs no explanation but I really want to encourage local participation in the first annual Mudnewton trail run. Both myself and my very good friend Erin Bennett, also from Uxbridge, are co-promoting Ontario’s newest trail run. Some may remember a cross country ski facility called Woodnewton which is located on the 6th concession just south of Wagg road.

For many years thousands of local and out of town skiers made their way around some of the most well designed trials on private property. The resort closed in the early 80′s but the trails are still there.

Since Erin acquired this beautiful 200 acre parcel of land it has been his vision to revitalize the trails and share them with the public. Due to the restrictions of the Oakridges Morraine Act and other limitations this can only be done a couple times per year.

Last year the property hosted the Ontario Mountain Bike Championships promoted by Chico racing. Participants came from all over Ontario to ride this spectaclar venue and they were not disappointed. This year a second race was held which drew even larger crowds.

On September 3rd, 2011 Woodnewton will be hosting it’s last event of the year…Mudnewton. Erin and I have choosen to donate a large portion of the proceeds to the Canadian Tire Jumpstart Program.

Knowing that every dollar donated from Uxbridge stays in Uxbridge, we really want to encourage local participation in this super fun 5 or 10km trail run that will be littered with cool and challenging obstacles. Our registration fees are very low compared to other similar races and if you enter the Promo code BODYFIT you will receive an additional discount. If you refer friends, you get in for FREE!

So, spread the word and register at www.mudnewton.com or you can also make a donation directly to our Jumpstart event here.

Here is just a sample of what some current members of Athletes Only Boot Camp had to say:

“Dale pushes me harder than I push myself. Learning new moves is great too. The group setting makes it more enjoyable. I haven’t been overly sore, and I find I have a bit more energy. I look forward to going (almost) every night. ” — Katie

“For me the boot camp is a great thing. Playing hockey for a living requires your body to be in top condition so for me this is a great way for me to start my training…Not only is it a great workout but all the people are great too and that makes it enjoyable to train.” — Mike

TRAIN MOVEMENTS NOT MUSCLES

It seems more and more of today’s individuals are working harder to become stronger and healthier. These individuals are constantly working to improve their activities by increasing their flexibility, strength, endurance, and power. However, very few if any begin strength and conditioning or rehabilitative programs by determining if they have adequate movement patterns.

The innovation of the Functional Movement Screen (FMS) is a proactive approach for determining who is at risk for injury, and then assigns corrective exercises to increase movement efficiency, and hopefully improve performance while decreasing injury potential. In recent years, the FMS has been used with many organizations, including the Montreal Canadiens, Toronto Blue Jays, Indianapolis Colts, and even the United States Military, just to name a few. According to physical preparation coach Dale Andrew, one of fewer than 100 FMS certified specialists in Canada, the purpose of the Functional Movement Screen is:

Safety: Identify individuals at risk, who are attempting to maintain or increase activity level.

Evaluation: Provide systematic tool to monitor progress and movement pattern development in the presences of changing fitness levels.

Corrective Strategies: Assist in program design by systematically using corrective exercise to normalize or improve fundamental movement patterns.

Standardization: Create a functional movement baseline which will allow rating and ranking movement for statistical observation.

For young and old alike, it adds another perspective of human movement that could potentially help clarify problems as well as improve performance and resistance to injury. And, as Coach Dale says, “More is not always better. Better is better. And, superior programming will always produce superior results.”

Whether you are just beginning an exercise program, or whether you’re an avid exerciser, or athlete and you would like to be movement screened, contact dale@bodyfit.ca. (Special group rates apply for teams and organizations.)
