Knock Out Hunger 13!

Knock Out Hunger is an annual event that is now in it’s 13th year.  Okami Kai and Body Fit invite you and your family to our open house in support of the Loaves and Fishes Food Bank.   On Monday December 5th at 6:00PM, bring the kids because there will be face painting, a really cool Karate demo,  kids fitness class demo, the local scouts will be in attendance and food and refreshments will be provided compliments of Subway Sandwiches Uxbridge and Cutie Pies and Cakes.

Santa has also confirmed that he will be paying a visit AND he is bringing a little something for the first 100 children!  This is also a great opportunity to get their photo taken with Santa without fighting the crowds at the mall.

While the event takes place on one evening, the food collection takes place over a few weeks.  Admission to the event is simply a non-perishable food item.  Donating is as easy as bringing in a food item to Body Fit Health Club and putting it under the Christmas tree.  All food and money raised go directly to the Loaves and Fishes Food Bank in Uxbridge.

This years holiday wish list includes:

noodles and sauce
rice and sauce
peanut butter
canned ham
tuna
pork and beans
flaked ham
shampoo
hand soap
toothpaste
toothbrushes – adult and child

So come on out and bring the kids!  It’s a great event.

Help Us Help Kids!

Twice per year there are line-ups of people handing over thousands and thousands of dollars at the arena.  I am referring to registration nights for organized sports and recreation.

Thousands of kids sign up for house league sports and the parents happily write a cheque.  It’s like clock work.

But not for all.

I’ve been coaching youth baseball in town for a few years now and 2 summers ago I was approached by one of my players parents.  I was asked if I could write a letter on their behalf so their child could play hockey.

I knew the family outside of baseball and was aware that money was always tight.  Paying for their child’s registration fees would have been a real struggle without the help of this one particular charity that has flown under the radar….at least for me.

I am referring to the Canadian Tire Jumpstart Program.

Twice per year Canadian Tire Jumpstart provides a grant up to a maximum of $300 per qualifying child per session (i.e., spring/summer, fall/winter) to the non-profit or charitable organization coordinating the sport or recreational activity. Since each child’s financial needs are unique, Canadian Tire Jumpstart’s grant goes towards equipment, registration and/or transportation costs.

The money to provide the funding comes from many sources including private donations, special events and in-store fund raisers.  But what really inspired me to want to help was that all the money that is raised in town stays in town.

Anyway, I was very happy to write the letter and even happier that I was introduced to the program.

Since then I am pleased to say that we are putting our support behind the Jumpstart Progam and here is how we are doing it:

1) From the sale of every small bottle of water at Body Fit, 50 cents will go directly to the program.

2) A portion of the proceeds from Mudnewton will also go to Jumpstart.

The water needs no explanation but I really want to encourage local participation in the first annual Mudnewton trail run.  Both myself and my very good friend Erin Bennett, also from Uxbridge, are co-promoting Ontario’s newest trail run.  Some may remember a cross country ski facility called Woodnewton which is located on the 6th concession just south of Wagg road.

For many years thousands of local and out of town skiers made their way around some of the most well designed trials on private property.  The resort closed in the early 80′s but the trails are still there.

Since Erin acquired this beautiful 200 acre parcel of land it has been his vision to revitalize the trails and share them with the public.  Due to the restrictions of the Oakridges Morraine Act and other limitations this can only be done a couple times per year.

Last year the property hosted the Ontario Mountain Bike Championships promoted by Chico racing.  Participants came from all over Ontario to ride this spectaclar venue and they were not disappointed.  This year a second race was held which drew even larger crowds.

On September 3rd, 2011 Woodnewton will be hosting it’s last event of the year…Mudnewton.  Erin and I have choosen to donate a large portion of the proceeds to the Canadian Tire Jumpstart Program.

Knowing that every dollar donated from Uxbridge stays in Uxbridge, we really want to encourage local participation in this super fun 5 or 10km trail run that will be littered with cool and challenging obstacles.   Our registration fees are very low compared to other similar races and if you enter the Promo code BODYFIT you will receive an additional discount.  If you refer friends, you get in for FREE!

So,  spread the word and register at www.mudnewton.com or you can also make a donation directly to our Jumpstart event here.

Message From Santa

This is of course written with the assumption that your kids still believe in Santa.  Even if they are skeptical, this message may turn them back into believers!

Last year Melanie did this for our kids and they watched it over and over.  Below is a sample of what you will get in your e-mail inbox.

If you like what you see and want to have a personalized message sent to your little one(s) just go to: www.portablenothpole.ca and follow the instructions.  Sympatico has also launched their version of a similar program at www.magicsanta.ca

Santa replies to everyone!

Knock Out Hunger 12!

Knock Out Hunger is an annual event that is now in it’s 12th year.  Scott Campsall of Okami Kai and Body Fit co-host an open house that is geared towards kids.  On Monday December 6th at 6:00PM, there will be face painting, a really cool Karate demo, the local scouts will be in attendance, food and refreshments will be provided compliments of Subway Sandwiches Uxbridge and Cutie Pies and Cakes.

To really make the evening special, Santa has confirmed that he will be paying a visit AND he is bringing a little something for the first 100 children!

This years holiday wish list includes: Canned tomatoes, Pancake Mix, Syrup, Spaghetti/pasta sauce, Dry cereal, Hamburger Helper, Tuna Helper, Canned fruit, Canned vegetables, Muffin Mix and Pork & Beans.

Typically, many donations to the Food Bank include baby food (formula, cereal, jarred food etc.) but at the moment they don’t have any clients with babies.  It’s very thoughtful but the baby food takes up much needed space for the items that they do need.

So come on out and bring the kids!  It’s a great event.

Christmas Gift Ideas

As December closes in on us, the Christmas shopping lists get passed around.  But not everyone has a list and so you get stuck trying to figure out what to buy.  Today I wanted to provide you with two options that just may help you out.

Sharleen Collins, our daycare supervisor, is one talented lady.  I made mention of this in our November Newsletter.  She has been crafting one-of-a-kind, wall mounted growth charts for kids that are  hand made with western red cedar.  The picture really doesn’t do it any justice.  So next time you are in the gym, check it out in person. (You can click on the picture to enlarge it.)

Because she makes these by hand, she can only make so many before Christmas and it’s on a first come first served basis.  To get yours in time for Christmas, you can contact her at: 4monkeys@bell.net or at 905-852-1704.

The next gift idea comes from a friend of Body Fit, Pearl Little.  Pearl is an independent Mary Kay Representative and has put together a gift package exclusively for friends and members of Body Fit.  Remember, Mary Kay isn’t just for ladies!

Pearl’s special offer can be found here:  Mary Kay Special for Body Fit

There are more great specials and events coming soon!

What Does Fitness Have To Do With Poppies?

So what does Fitness have to do with poppies?

I had to think about it for a while but there is a correlation.  Here’s a clue:  If you were asked, “What do you value the most in your life?”  What would you say if I said you could NOT use “family” as your answer?

What would you give up or sacrifice over anything else but that one particular thing?

Depending on where you are in your life and what you may or may not have experienced, I would suggest that “your health” was near the top of your list.

Symbolically, the poppy represents many things but one of them would surely be Sacrifice.  If you have ever thought about what you would sacrifice for your family, your children, your spouse or your siblings I’d hazard a guess to say your answer would be …..almost anything.  And you would not hesitate a second to do it.  But would you sacrifice your health?

More often than not, that’s exactly what we do.  We work that extra over-time so we can afford a bigger present or a better holiday.  Our evenings are spent driving kids to and from activities and before you know it, you have no time for yourself.

Those whom we are honouring, have and are willing to sacrifice their lives for our country and our freedom.   That being said, have you ever seen an out-of-shape soldier?  Not likely.  They know that if they don’t make time for their heath, then they cannot take care of what they hold most valuable ….our freedom and their families freedom.  Their health becomes part and parcel of doing their job.

Whether we find it hard to keep up with our kids, our grand kids or taking on greater responsibility with our parents, if we’ve neglected our health we find those common things much harder to do.

So why is it that if our families are at the top of the “most valuable list” and health is considered to be somewhere near the top, that we don’t put more thought into taking care of our health if we can’t take care of our most prized possessions without it?  Why is there such a gap?  Such a difference in priority between number one and number two on our list?

We all have to be soldiers at one time or another.  That means taking care of ourselves so we can take care of what is most important to us.  That means thinking about whether our health is worth sacrificing.  Remember, if you haven’t got your health……….you know the rest.

Support our troops, honour those who fought for our freedom and buy a poppy.

H1N1 Shots – Commentary

H1N1 has made it to the headlines again!  This time, it’s about the massive line-ups all over southern Ontario.  Right here in Uxbridge I heard the waiting times have been hours long.  It’s amazing how long we’ll wait for something if we think it will help us stay healthy.  Quite ironic when I think about it.

I was at a fitness marketing conference in Orlando a week or so ago.  There was a common theme that kept coming back although the topics of discussion were all quite different.  I think it was summed up quite nicely by a man name Juan Carlos Santana.  Known as one of the most sought after authorities on functional training and human performance, J.C. correlated the general perception of many things in general (by today’s standards) with that of health and fitness.  Basically,   people look for instant gratification in almost everything we do.

Who thinks of saving money for that special thing we have always wanted?  Instead..we swipe the card and pay later.  Who wants to take the time to learn how to fix something anymore?  Instead, we either get rid of it and buy a new one (on the card) or pay someone else to fix it.  It’s faster, easier and an instant fix.   Not many people are mechanically inclined anymore and those who are…well they are doing well for themselves.

The same seems to be true when it comes to our health.  If there is a pill that claims it will make you skinny in 30 days or less, it will sell off the shelf instantly.  Medications will quickly take effect and rid you or sneezing or sniffling  for 24 hours a day!  All you have to do is keep taking the pill.

So what got me thinking about H1N1?

I got an e-mail from a friend of mine who was at the conference in Orlando.  He addressed H1N1 on his blog and stuck his neck out.  He posted his opinion.  Open for ridicule and opposition, he gave the reader his 2 cents on what he thinks about the whole H1N1 shot.

You can read his post here:  http://torontofitnessblog.com/?p=237

I replied and posted a story of my own but from my own personal experience.  And that was what got me thinking about the message that J.C. Santana was trying to get across……the benefits of DELAYED GRATIFICATION.

Our bodies are amazing.  If we let it/help it work the way it’s supposed to work, you’d be surprised what it can do.  But it takes time to realize it.  There are faculties that we haven’t even begun to experience because we don’t know how to do it.  Take for example, the feat of lifting a car in cases of do or die situations.  It’s been documented many times over.  Individuals lifting cars off of loved ones to save their lives.

Did they work out for years or have extra special powers?  No.  It was there all the time.   Imagine if we knew how to tap into that “super human” strength on a regular basis.  What if our bodies were already designed to over come super bugs, disease and other life threatening conditions?  Maybe it already can and we just haven’t looked in the right direction or taken the time to figure it out?  Or maybe, just maybe… we are hindering it.

Below is what I posted on Conor’s blog.   My experience was with a common problem that millions of people face every year and throw millions of dollars at to get rid of it quickly.   I decided to take the long road……and it worked.  Will it help with H1N1?  I guess I’ll find out.  Oh, and the red lobster comment in his post is an inside joke.

Hey Conor,
Nice post!  I hear that eating at Red Lobster 4 days in a row also helps!

But seriously, I agree.  Here is a little thing I’ll share with you.  I used to have really bad allergies.  I had to take days off of work in early spring because of all the pollen flying around.  It would literally disable me.
Like everyone else, I took every allergy  medication  on the shelf.  Year after year I would have to change it up because the one I used the previous year didn’t work anymore.  Eventually I ran out of choices….
Then..wait for it…..I started to take vitamins!  I also did a 9 day detox (available at Body Fit Health Club for those of you in the Uxbridge Area!..thanks Conor) But Conor can also set you up with it. Anyway, I’ve been allergy symptom free for 2 years and haven’t taken a pill since. Not for the flu, a cold..NOTHING.  And I have three young kids that bring home every bug under the sun.  Wanna know what I take?  I’ve posted it here:

http://uxbridgefitness.com/blog/

And you can get it all from Conor too.

Our body’s natural immune system is truly amazing.  Unfortunately it’s always working on over drive and we aren’t feeding it with the vitamins and minerals it needs to keep up.
So, give your body a fighting chance.  It won’t let you down.

My allergy killing, germ killing, bacteria fighting secret is:

1) Daily multivitamins (vitalizer by Shaklee)

2) Daily Vitamin E – 3 per day (400IU per capsule)

3) Daily Omega 3 – 3 per day ( fish oil 1065mg, Omega 3 Fatty Acid 630mg and EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid ) 400mg and DHA (docosahexaenoic acid) 200mg.)

4) Daily Glucosamine Sulfate – 2 per day

And remember, nothing happens over night, Rome wasn’t built in a day and good things come to those who wait.

Think Twice, Speak Once

The idea of choosing your words carefully sounds easy enough, but how many times do you end up with your foot in your mouth? Everyone can probably recall a situation where someone offended them by saying something rude or out of line. These comments are not only embarrassing, but they can also damage relationships. Even the way you talk to yourself can be hurtful. Instead of saying “I can’t,” replace it with “I wish.”  Swap “I’m a failure” with “I didn’t succeed this time.” If you say the wrong thing in front of others, chances are that people will remember it. Wouldn’t you prefer to be remembered for something more positive? Once you have said something out loud it cannot be taken back, and rarely can it be undone even with a tremendous amount of work.

How To Be As BOLD AS A LION!

uxbridge-fitnessThis may be a little off topic for you Uxbridge fitness buffs, but it is TOTALLY relevant!

I got this email from Jeff Anderson of www.MuscleNerdFitness.com and thought you’d like it!  The following article comes from Master Scott Bolan – a pretty interesting guy - who has spent YEARS of intensely studying not only Martial Arts, Combat, Warrior Fitness and Strength; but also Art, Philosophy, Mind Control, Persuasion, Seduction, Sales, Negotiation and even Firewalking.

As Jeff pointed out in his email, “the fact is that fear actually can have a white-knuckle grip on so many parts of our lives.

…fear of failure

…fear of gaining weight

…fear of LOSING weight (yes…it happens!)

…fear of ANYTHING can hold us back from being our best and reaching for the stars!”

I sincerely hope this article helps YOU as much as it has my other Uxbridge personal training clients…

“How To Be As Bold As A LION!”

By Master Scott Bolan

www.martialmasterysecrets.com

===========================================

Bruce Lee said “consciousness of self is the greatest hindrance to mankind.”

He was absolutely correct. Self-consciousness is another word for self-doubt, which is a form of fear.

And fear is your enemy’s greatest weapon againstyou. It’s also the greatest obstacle between you and anything you desire.

The way to get rid of fear, permanently, is to train your mind to give up your emotional attachment to the outcome.

What I mean by that is – have you ever noticed the guy who has all the hot women acts as if he couldn’t care less? But the guy who is desperate couldn’t get a date to save his life. You could say the guy with all the girls has lots of money, but that is rarely the case.

Have you ever noticed that someone with money tends to make more money? But the guy who’s broke tends to constantly be broke and struggling to get by?

The desperate guy in both situations is emotionally attached to the outcome. He “needs it too badly.”

Thus, he is sending out an energy that is actually pushing away what he wants.

The one who has all the money, the hot chicks, etc, is putting off a different type of energy that attracts rather than repels.

Does that make sense?

And although when reading the above situations one wouldn’t think of fear, in fact they are both fear-based situations.

The desperate guy unknowingly is afraid of not having the money, afraid of not having a pretty girlfriend, etc.

So afraid in fact that he is attracting that which he fears.

And thus the wisdom of Bruce Lee’s words “consciousness of self is the greatest hindrance to mankind.”

It applies to every area of life.

So you may be thinking “how do I start if I don’t have what I want to begin with?”

Simple!

Train your mind to let go of your emotional attachment to the outcome, and Be as Bold as a Lion.

A Lion isn’t afraid of you. He isn’t afraid of losing. He doesn’t even think about it.

He just attacks, instinctively.

Go for what you want in that way.

Kick the ball out ahead of you and chase it, and stop thinking so much.

I’m not saying to be careless and foolhardy. I’m saying develop the Lion’s Intuitive Instinct and replace your self-doubt with it.

If you look deep enough, you’ll find self-doubt affecting everything you do.

But as of right now, it doesn’t have to be that way any longer.

With Martial Mastery you’ll now get the solution.

Once you understand it, and then apply it forevermore it will become as natural as breathing.

Yours in Warrior Wisdom,

Master Scott Bolan
