Re-Opening Body Fit

February 13, 2021 By Andy Luukkonen

When told by the Province that we could re-open our doors back in July, my inbox and social media were blowing up with messages from members and new members asking questions and expressing their excitement. That said, it was also getting its fair share of hold and cancellation requests that were consistent with the survey I had put out about a month earlier.  Some were willing to “wait and see” and some just were not confident enough to come back.

As the second wave emerged, the restrictions escalated and the general confidence of the public and members about the state of our COVID situation began to wane.  Going into Red was essentially like finishing strong.  We were simply finishing what we had started when we re-opening.

During lockdown I have been busy strategizing with my industry group, on calls with officials in the Premiers office and following the news trying to assess public sentiment.  This second re-opening is a lot different than the first.  We have been through the colour gamut of restrictions, the medical community is NOT in favour of opening and I have received more e-mails requesting that memberships be held or cancelled in the event we do re-open.  The vaccine roll out is not going as planned, we now have 4 COVID variants in Canada and the experts are already suggesting there will be a 3rd wave/shutdown as a result of those variants.  I think the writing is on the wall and the vast majority of people are not comfortable with re-opening…yet.

The fitness industry is in the business of helping people improve their health and well-being and earning a living while doing so.  Trying to convince people that it’s safe to visit the gym, and losing money because we cannot serve enough people because of the restrictions is simply a losing battle. Industry wide, it’s been proven that gyms lose more money, create unnecessary stress for staff and lose more members trying to serve general memberships while open in RED than we do staying closed.  We have learned that just because you can open, doesn’t mean you should.

The “Red” battle simply depletes resources that can be used for a stronger re-opening when the time is right.  That time is NOT on Tuesday February 16th 2021.  Body Fit will keep all memberships and payments on HOLD/FROZEN.  When the Region opens in ORANGE, we will open our doors for general membership.

However, there are options that we can viably accommodate.  One on One Personal Training and Semi Private/Small Group Training will be available for those that are interested.  Current training clients will be contacted by their trainers to discuss options and we will offer new budget friendly small group training services in the week ahead.  Those that wish to sign up will be able to do so.

In closing, I want to thank everyone for their continued support.  I know that by not opening right away there will be some disappointed people.  But please know that Body Fit is in this for the long haul and the decision to remain closed to general membership is the right one for the business, my staff and for the majority of people that just aren’t ready to get back to the gym.  I look forward to hitting the ground running when the time IS right and that time will come sooner than later.

Yours in Health,

Andy Luukkonen

Breathing with a Purpose… Part 2

November 15, 2019 By Andy Luukkonen

In part 2 we build on diaphragmatic breathing from part 1.  You can find Part 1 here in case you missed it: http://uxbridgefitness.com/breathing-with-a-purpose-part-1.html  If you have been exposed to any type of exercise training, you’ve probably heard, “breathe out on the hard part.”

For some, every part is the hard part!  Today I use a very simple exercise to help explain how you can figure it out and why it’s important to get it right.

Breathing with a Purpose Part 1

November 12, 2019 By Andy Luukkonen

Today I want to address something that seems very simple but so many people get it wrong when it comes to combining it with exercise.  I’m talking about breathing.  How we inhale, how we exhale and how to sequence it properly when we exercise.

Breathing properly and purposefully can be a game changer in many aspects of our lives.  From relieving tension to increasing mobility to facilitating adequate spinal stability, once you learn the technique, you’ll begin to see the benefits.

Enjoy part 1 below:)

It’s Called a Safety Squat Bar

September 20, 2019 By Andy Luukkonen

We’ve had these in the gym for a while but I don’t see a lot of people using them so I thought I’d put together a quick video to explain how to use it, why it’s more comfortable than a straight bar and for those that are just learning to squat in a cage…..I highly recommend it.

In today’s video post I talk about the Bird Dog Exercise.  It has become a staple in many routines and it’s a great exercise “IF” you do it right.  Below I talk about what I see when it’s done wrong and how to fix it with a simple cue.

Beefing Up the Dead Bug

August 26, 2019 By Andy Luukkonen

In today’s video post I wanted to give you a progression that I am now using with our Training Clients.  The standard dead bug is a great core exercise that I see lots of people doing.  I also see variations of the exercise but generally speaking, they all fall into the sagittal plane.

I explained the planes of motion in a post not that long ago.  You can find that post (Planes of Motion Explained) here. So, I wanted to show you how I integrate progressions into a workout by simply adding or changing planes.   I hope you enjoy it.

Got Forearm and/or Elbow Pain?

August 19, 2019 By Andy Luukkonen

In today’s video I explain how I have been able to relieve and manage pain in forearms and elbows that can be caused by simple over use.  I know I’m not the only one that has experienced this type of pain and sometimes you may not even recall what caused it.  Regardless, check out the video below and I hope it helps.

Got Sore Feet?

July 30, 2019 By Andy Luukkonen

As we move further into summer we tend to put more miles on our feet than usual.  Whether it be walking, jogging, sports or just being outside more.  As a result, our feet take a beating.

We have a large facial band that runs along the bottom of our feet from the heel bone to our toes.  The more we are on our feet the more wear and tear we put on that band.  In some cases if we ignore the symptoms (pain and discomfort) it can result in a very painful condition called Plantar Fasciitis.

Before you let it get that far, I have a couple tips that should bring you some relief and keep you moving all summer long:)

The “Rib Out”

June 14, 2019 By Andy Luukkonen

This particular situation is actually quite common and in my experience it is quite common this time of year (late spring and early summer).  However, most folks that suffer from this will right it off as a tight or strained muscle.  Unfortunately, doing nothing will yield similar results and the pain between their shoulder blade and their spine will persist. (NOTE: this can also occur at the joints where the ribs meet the sternum (chest bone))

In my video below I explain what a “rib out” is, where you will typically feel the pain and what movements will provoke it.  I also tell you what to do to get quick and painless relief.
